What to Expect when Starting Therapy

What to Expect when Starting Therapy

Starting therapy can bring up a lot of uncertainty. It’s not always clear what to expect, especially if you’ve never been before. You might wonder what you’re supposed to talk about, whether you’re doing it “right,” or if you’re allowed to just show up and not have the words for what you’re feeling. All of that is normal. Therapy isn’t about performing. It’s about being human, even when that means feeling unsure.

Starting Therapy

One of the first things I try to communicate to clients is that there’s no one way to do therapy. The first session is often about getting to know each other. We might talk about what brings you in, what your day-to-day looks like, or how certain patterns have been showing up in your life. But there’s no pressure to dive deep right away. You get to set the pace. The most important part early on is creating a space that feels safe enough to be real in, even if that takes time.

It’s also important to know that therapy doesn’t always follow a straight path. Some sessions might feel meaningful or emotional. Others might feel quiet, or like nothing big happened. That’s okay. Therapy often works in small shifts. Sometimes the most valuable moments come from something subtle, like noticing a reaction you didn’t have words for before, or being able to say something you’ve never said out loud. Those are the moments that can open the door to healing.

Feeling Awkward About Therapy? You’re Not Alone

What to Expect

There’s no expectation to have a clear goal every time you come in. Some clients arrive with a long list of things they want to unpack. Others say, “I don’t know where to start.” Either way is welcome. We can figure it out together. Just showing up, even when you’re not sure what to say, is a meaningful part of the process.

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, but you feel nervous or unsure, that’s completely valid. You don’t need to be in crisis, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Therapy is a space where you get to bring your full self, at your own pace, with the support of someone who’s there to walk alongside you. It’s not about fixing you. It’s about creating space for curiosity, growth, and care.
