“Things will calm down after summer.”
“Once school starts, life will get back to normal.”
“After this project is finished, I’ll finally have time to breathe.”
Most of us have said something like this at one point or another. We convince ourselves that peace is waiting just beyond the next deadline, the next season, or the next item on our calendar. We picture a future where life slows down and everything finally feels manageable. But what if that version of “normal” never comes?
Life has a way of moving from one season to the next. Summer turns into the school year. The school year becomes the holidays. The holidays give way to a new year filled with fresh goals and responsibilities. As one busy season ends, another often begins. While the details may change, life rarely stops moving. The problem is believing that we can only experience peace once life becomes less busy. When we spend all our energy waiting for the perfect time to slow down, we often miss the moments right in front of us. We postpone rest, meaningful conversations, quiet moments, and even joy because we believe we will appreciate them more later. If our minds are always focused on what comes next, it becomes difficult to fully experience where we are today. We begin living for a finish line that keeps moving farther away.
Looking ahead is an important part of life. However, our sense of peace cannot depend on everything around us becoming predictable or perfectly organized. Life has never worked that way. Instead of asking, “When will life get back to normal?” Perhaps a better question is, “How can I find peace in the season I am living today?” Sometimes the answer is surprisingly simple. It may look like enjoying your morning coffee without reaching for your phone, taking a short walk after dinner, sitting quietly for a few minutes before the day begins, or giving yourself permission to say no when your schedule is already full. These moments may seem small, but they remind us that peace is often found in the middle of ordinary life, not at the end of it.
There is also freedom in accepting that “normal” is always changing. The life you have today is likely different from the life you imagined five years ago, and five years from now it will probably look different again. Every season brings new opportunities, new responsibilities, and new challenges. Instead of constantly chasing a version of life that no longer exists, we can learn to embrace the one we have been given. There is an old wisdom that reminds us there is “a time for every purpose under heaven.” Every season has something to teach us. Some seasons invite growth, others require patience, and still others call us to rest. Rather than waiting for life to slow down before allowing ourselves to breathe, perhaps we can choose to breathe right here, in the middle of the life we are already living. Maybe peace has never been waiting for us after summer, after the holidays, or after the next big milestone. Maybe it has been available all along.
